Google in Social Gaming Acquisition Trifecta

Add another small gaming company to Google’s social media portfolio.

Just weeks after acquiring social game and gadget maker Slide for a reported $182 million, the search company has purchased social game developer SocialDeck.

“We’re super excited to announce that someone found our social games as fun as you have–in this case, that ’someone’ is Google,” the company said in an announcement splashed across its homepage.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and Google isn’t saying much about its plans for the company, though presumably it will play a role in the broad social-networking service it’s rumored to be developing. Also figuring prominently in that effort: Online game developer and Google partner Zynga, Slide and virtual currency outfit Jambool, also acquired by Google (GOOG) earlier this month.

Google Goes Hunting for a Music Boss

Anybody want to run the music division of the world’s biggest media company? Because Google is hiring: The search giant is casting about for an executive to run its music service, which doesn’t actually exist yet.

Industry sources tell me Google has talked to several digital media executives about the job, but has yet to hire anyone. I’ve asked Google for comment and will update if I get one.

At first glance, this scenario sounds a bit like the one that MySpace went through two years ago, when it built out MySpace Music, then hired president Courtney Holt from MTV after the service had launched. In this case, though, Google hasn’t formally announced the music service and doesn’t have deals with the big music labels in place yet.

It does have executives working on the service, though. YouTube has loaned out general counsel Zahavah Levine for some time, and earlier this summer Google (GOOG) brought on another attorney, music veteran Elizabeth Moody, to help put the thing together. And I as should have pointed out earlier (thanks to a reader for the nudge), Android head Andy Rubin is very much involved, as the project is tied to his mobile operating system.

And what, exactly, is Google Music going to be? Good question. Most music executives I talk to imagine that Google would eventually like to run a cloud-based streaming music service. But my hunch is that Google’s initial plan will be a less-ambitious download store, a la Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes–which is due for its own upgrade very soon.

Gilt Groupe’s Susan Lyne Talks About Fashion, Local and (Not) IPO!

Yesterday, BoomTown dropped into the lower Park Avenue offices of the New York-based Gilt Groupe, the online fashion retail site.

Since 2007, the site has raised $83 million from General Atlantic and Matrix Partners, giving it a $400 million valuation and spurring interest from investment bankers who think Gilt might be a good candidate for an initial public offering.

That’s doubtful for now, given how important it is for Gilt to solidify and expand its business, even as competition increases.

But already, Gilt has built an important consumer brand online, using its funding to expand the member-based service that offers a range of well-known fashion brands and luxury goods at sample sale prices, much like the originator of the idea–France’s Vente-Privee.

To keep all the fashion moving forward, Gilt hired former Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSO) CEO Susan Lyne, who also was a big-time television exec at ABC, in 2008.

Along with a turbocharge of its operations as its sales grow, Gilt is also attempting to expand its offerings to travel and other experiences, via its Jetsetter site, and growing its base of local “city” sites for a range of services, such as spas.

Also on deck: More personalization for users, to better targets deals, as well as mobile versions of Gilt.

Of course, Gilt is operating in a very competitive arena, with rivals coming at the business from a number of different ways, such as Groupon, the hot discount deals start-up.

New Zune2 review (part 2-1) upgrade, hardware, software and Social

When we first caught wind that Microsoft was in fact doing its own portable media player (and then published the first ever photo of the Zune), we hoped it might finally be the play to knock the iPod off its perch. Sure, in mid 2006 there was no shortage of devices more advanced than any given iPod, but then (and now) the iPod enjoyed unchecked dominance of the market in the US and many countries abroad. Steve Jobs knew the day would come that Microsoft would really enter the game.
What we were hoping for was that the portable media world might be in store for another Sony / Nintendo upset. Remember in the 90s how Sony and Nintendo's partnership went awry, and Sony, totally sick of Nintendo completely owning the game console space, brought out the original PlayStation? Before the console's second generation was through Sony had more market share than they knew what to do with. Sony upped Nintendo's game with the PlayStation, then upped their own with the PlayStation 2 -- and took over.
If Sony could do the impossible and topple the infallible Nintendo of old, surely Microsoft, the world's largest technology company, could make at least make a dent in Apple's armor. Yeah, the first-gen product is important, but the second gen product is crucial, because if you can't up your game -- and everyone else's -- you're just another player. This year, Microsoft really had to make the Zune count. Read on to judge for yourself whether they did.
The first generation Zune, as we all know, was little more than a slew of off the shelf hardware and software Microsoft cobbled together in a rush to make a play for the annual holiday gold rush. And the interesting part is, all things considered, it really wasn't bad at all. No one thought it was "done", but it was a lot better than some of the other PMC-based devices we'd seen to date. This year Microsoft brought a slew of new Zune products (and enhancements) to the table, including two new players (flagship 80GB and the flash model), new device software (which runs on all devices), new desktop software, and a new service (Zune Social, a music-oriented social network reminiscent of Xbox Live).

The first generation Zune

Device software
Yeah, we know Microsoft technically skipped right past device software v2.0 and jumped to 2.2, but the update is the best place to start since it affects the most users and devices. Microsoft won some well-deserved brownie points for ensuring all Zune players new and old can run the new firmware, meaning that for now your old Zune will have feature parity with the new hardware.
So here's the deal with the device software: it adds some crucial bits (many of which we expected the first time), takes away some minor but important things, and leaves the other 90% largely unchanged. First, the stuff Zune 2.0 takes away:
Song flagging
The five star rating system
The language menu The good stuff, though, is very good:
MPEG-4 and H.264 playback support
Podcasting support
Sync over WiFi (which we'll get to later)
In terms of performance, both old and new hardware and firmware were almost identical in testing. A lot of people have been claiming the new firmware is much snappier, but we didn't find that to be true at all. Two Zune 30 devices boot up within a half second between 1.0 and 2.0 series firmwares, and the flash-based Zune 8 we tested booted to home screen less than a second faster. Traversing menus took no more or less time or when syncing and the like. (Note: scrolling through long lists appears to happen slightly faster, but that's likelier an interface tweak, not a performance increase.)

Bain Leaves News Corp.’s FAN, Which Will Be Integrated Into MySpace: The Internal Memos

Adam Bain (pictured here), the well-regarded exec who ran the Fox Audience Network, called FAN, is going to Twitter to head up its early but increasingly aggressive advertising revenue efforts.

Here is the internal memo from News Corp. digital head Jon Miller about the changes at the ad network, in which it is clear the company is scrambling to shift strategy.

News Corp. (NWS) had been working on a plan for more than a year to spin off FAN and sell a piece of it to private equity investors, in part to hold onto Bain.

Now, it will go spinning back to MySpace, its principal source of ad inventory.

In his memo to employees below, Miller talked about the spin-off discussions, which failed principally due to issues over internal revenue share with MySpace.

Thus, back to the troubled social networking site, which is–after much exec turmoil–being run by Mike Jones. Jones has been trying to reinvigorate MySpace with a new look and a strategy focused on music and entertainment content.

Said Miller: “By aligning the FAN platform directly with MySpace, we will be able to utilize its services to further drive MySpace’s revenue efforts and to play a key part of the site’s planned re-launch later this year.”

News of Bain’s departure as FAN president–after a dozen years at News Corp.–to become a top exec at Twitter was first reported by TechCrunch earlier today, but without details of what would happen to FAN.

Bain also addresses his departure in the memo below.

First, here is the Miller memo:

Dear FAN employees:

I wanted to address the media reports this morning regarding Adam’s departure and also share some details on our plans for FAN moving forward. First off, Adam Bain will indeed be departing FAN–a company he has led from the ground up and built into one of the Web’s top five advertising platforms in just over two years. He has been an invaluable asset to this company and we wish him well in the future.

In addition, today we are announcing a plan to move forward with an integration of FAN’s team and technology directly with MySpace. As many of you know, we have had discussions with a number of interested parties in recent months with respect to potential partnerships involving FAN. After deliberating over these external options, we ultimately decided that the best path for FAN–and for News Corp.–is to put this leading-edge technology to work to benefit our existing assets. By aligning the FAN platform directly with MySpace, we will be able to utilize its services to further drive MySpace’s revenue efforts and to play a key part of the site’s planned re-launch later this year.

Bruce Wiseman will work closely with Mike Jones and Jack Kennedy on the overall MySpace integration efforts, and you will be hearing more from your managers shortly on details regarding the integration and how it will affect you. In addition, we will be sharing information broadly with you as much as possible over the next several weeks.

Lastly, I want to thank all of you for your commitment and dedication to FAN over the past two years–this is an incredibly talented team that’s accomplished a great deal in a very short amount of time. Also, please join me in once again thanking Adam for all his work–he will be missed both personally and professionally–and we look forward to crossing paths with him in the future.

Regards,
Jon Miller

And here is the Bain memo to his employees:

Guys–

I wanted to let you know that after 12 years at Newscorp, I’m moving on to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in San Francisco.

As you can imagine, this is a pretty emotional decision and one that didn’t come easily. I’ve literally grown up inside this company and will always be grateful for the amazing opportunities that were afforded to me–the greatest among them: the opportunity to work with and lead this team.

The things we’ve done in the ad business–Self-Serve, Targeting, Segmentation and our work with big data–are too numerous to detail here, but they are industry-defining and have set Newscorp up to succeed for many years to come.

My deep thanks to Jon Miller–I’m humbled by the freedom and support given to me here at FAN. And lastly, I want to thank you, my team. I will miss the heck out of you, but I’m psyched to watch you continue to succeed, albeit from afar.

Bruce will be leading the company thru this transitional period.

Thanks again for all of your support and the privilege of leading this extraordinary group over the last two years.

–ab

Finally, here is the News Corp. official press release on the whole, well, messy thing:

MYSPACE AND FOX AUDIENCE NETWORK ANNOUNCE ORGANIZATIONAL INTEGRATION PLAN

MySpace to Leverage FAN’s Team and Leading Advertising Platform FAN President Adam Bain to Depart

Los Angeles, Calif.–August 23, 2010–News Corporation’s MySpace (http://www.MySpace.com) and Fox Audience Network (FAN) today announced a plan to integrate the FAN business directly with MySpace. The move will enable MySpace to leverage FAN’s team and its leading technology platform. In addition, FAN announced that its President, Adam Bain, will leave the company to pursue other opportunities.

“FAN and MySpace have worked together closely over the past several years and this integration will further align these two properties,” said Jon Miller, Chairman and CEO of Digital Media for News Corporation. “Adam has been an invaluable asset to News Corp, having led FAN’s growth from the ground up into one of the Web’s largest ad platforms, and we wish him well in the future.”

“By fully integrating FAN’s platform and team, we are in a great position to further leverage FAN’s technology, which allows advertisers to serve the right ad to the right person and apply that to content across MySpace to provide a more relevant experience for our users,” said Mike Jones, President of MySpace. “The FAN team is incredibly talented and we’re excited to welcome them to the MySpace family.”

Fox Audience Network was created in 2007 and currently reaches more than 150 million Internet users. The company leverages proprietary advertising technology to create highly-targeted advertising campaigns for a wide range of marketers, while also delivering cutting-edge tools and services to third-party publisher partners, advertising agencies and research companies.
